In Brazil

The biotechnology sector in Brazil currently brings together over 300 companies. The industry has an estimated annual turnover of US$ 4 billion - or 1.5% of country's GDP.

It is a young industry: 50% are start-ups or have been in business for less than 7 years. It employs almost 28 thousand people.

Brazil has an active science park/incubator movement, similar to that in place in the UK.

80% of companies and universities are based in South East region, mainly São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Brazil hosts 3 world-class biotech research centres: Fiocruz, leading pharmaceuticals, vaccines and diagnostic research & manufacturing complex - also WHO accredited yellow fever vaccine supplier; Instituto Butantan, producer of serums and vaccines and Embrapa, Brazilian agricultural research company Genomics: Brazil's leading and most internationally recognised area of expertise in Biotechnology.

Together with the US and the UK, Brazil has been in the forefront of the Genoma Project: in January 2000 FAPESP, the State of São Paulo Research Council, announced the gene sequencing of the Xylella Fastidiosa bacteria, which was carried out by a network of Brazilian universities funded by FAPES.

Programmes involving Genoma projects have been now expanded to other areas, mainly in the fields of agribusiness and human health, e.g., sugar cane and cancer.

These outstanding achievements have placed Brazil among the top countries in biotechnology research, thus attracting the interest of the main US, European and Japanese players. Main areas of interest in Biotechnology: Human & Animal health: pharmaceuticals, vaccines and diagnostic kits; Natural medicines; Agribusiness; Genome research; Environment; Bioinformatics.
